Hearing care, built around what you actually hear.

Modern hearing aids can do remarkable things. Whether they deliver them in real life depends almost entirely on how they’re fitted — and that’s where most journeys go quiet.

Most people who walk into a hearing clinic for the second or third time have a story that sounds the same. The aids were technically working. The audiogram looked fine. But the world still sounded wrong — sharp where it should be soft, loud where it should be background, exhausting in a way that made the cinema, the dinner table, the grandchildren feel like work.

Closing the gap.

BestHear exists because that gap between what hearing aids can do and what most patients experience is fixable. Our founder, Armaj Ali, spent the better part of two decades inside the NHS, the private sector, and hospitals around the world trying to work out why the gap kept appearing — and what closed it.

Twenty years of asking the same question.

Armaj qualified in Hearing and Balance Studies at the University of Bristol and went straight into the NHS, working across adult and paediatric audiology. His first overseas posting was joining Cork’s newborn hearing screening programme — the first of its kind in Ireland — where he worked with children across the autism spectrum and built a child-friendly assessment tool now used in clinics he’ll never see.

Credentialed twice over.

He’s HCPC and AHCS registered as both a clinical scientist and a hearing aid dispenser — a dual registration that’s rare in private practice and the reason BestHear can offer the diagnostic depth of a hospital clinic alongside private-sector responsiveness.

Working out where the gap really lives.

London brought roles across the NHS and a stint with the cochlear implant team at Great Ormond Street. The pattern Armaj kept noticing wasn’t about the technology — manufacturers had largely solved the engineering. It was about what happened in the fitting chair: the same aids producing wildly different real-world experiences depending on how they were set up and who was doing the listening.

In 2015 he moved to Medina to build the audiology service inside a newly opened National Guard hospital from scratch. Setting up a clinic from zero — choosing every protocol, every workflow, every way of measuring success — is the kind of constraint that makes you question things you previously took for granted.

A constraint that changed how he listened.

The new clinic was missing the one tool standard fittings rely on most — Real Ear Measurement (REM), the objective check that confirms a hearing aid is delivering, at the eardrum, what the prescription asks for. He couldn’t wait for the equipment. The patients couldn’t either.

Without the screen to glance at, the only source of truth left was the wearer. Armaj used the goals of REM as the framework, but the verification came from the patient — full clinical attention on what they were actually hearing while the adjustments were being made.

He got good at this subjective fine-tuning over the years. But like REM on its own, it wasn’t consistent. Some appointments produced exceptional outcomes. Others didn’t. He could see both halves of the picture, and he was certain neither alone was the answer.

Bringing it Home.

Armaj returned to the UK in 2019 with REM available again. The question wasn’t whether to go back to the old workflow. It was whether the two halves he’d been using separately — objective measurement and subjective fine-tuning — could work together inside a single appointment.

The first patient he tried this combined approach with was so moved by the result that she made an unsolicited donation to the NHS in thanks. That was the moment he knew the combination was producing something neither method could produce alone.

Patients now describe the experience in nearly the same words: I forgot I was wearing them. That point — when the hearing aid stops being a hearing aid and becomes hearing again — is what we now call the HEAREKA moment. Two clinics deliver it: Parkway in Swansea, and our Pontyclun clinic in the Vale of Glamorgan.

The Heareka Moment.

The HEAREKA Moment is where two truths happen at the same time. The wearer forgets they’re wearing hearing aids. They and those around them are no longer reminded hearing aids are needed. Why? Because it simply works well from day one. When hearing aids are setup with Heareka, nobody will have to convince you to keep wearing them. You wouldn’t want to be without them, because you’ll finally experience life as it should always have been — quality hearing without the effort.

Passionate – Dedicated – Professional

See the HEAREKA moment for yourself.

  • The wearer forgets they’re wearing the aids — that’s the working definition of a successful fit.

  • Conversations in noise become conversations again — restaurants, family meals, the cinema.

  • Most settings handle themselves automatically. Less for you to think about, less to go wrong.

  • Family members stop being reminded that the aids exist — the harder of the two tests.

  • People stop having to repeat themselves, raise their voice, or face you head-on to be understood.

  • Phone calls and television go back to normal volume — for everyone in the room.

  • The fit is built around what you actually hear in the room, not just what the screen says.
  • Untreated hearing loss is increasingly linked to cognitive decline — the right fit isn’t cosmetic, it’s protective.

  • When hearing aids work this well, nobody has to convince you to wear them.

Came here for my first ever wax removal treatment following recommendation from my GP. To my amazement I was able to book a slot that suited me on the same day of treatment!

My mum had a digital hearing aid a few months ago from Armaj. He was so professional, patient and courteous in dealing with my elderly mum. She loved him. The hearing aid has been amazing and has completely transformed her life. She should have had it years ago. I would highly recommend Armaj and the BestHear Clinic.

14/11/24 — I had a fantastic experience at BestHear and would highly recommend to anyone having issues with their ears. Originally I went in for a tympanometry test as I was having crackling sounds/dizziness and pressure, however Dr Armaj Ali explained what he could see and decided ear wax removal was the better option. This process was relatively straightforward and I was shown what the issue was and the affects that it could cause. He then tested my hearing and was very thorough throughout the appointment ensuring I understood what was happening and why. After having issues for months, going back and forth to the Doctor’s and never getting any answers, this was the best thing I could have done for my ears and ear health. Dr Armaj Ali also recommended a spray for my ears to prevent the return of an infection and has said I can come back in a week to make sure things are good. Fantastic experience! Thank you :)

21/11/24 — editing my review to add that I went back to BestHear today and had another fantastic experience. Dr Armaj Ali took another look at my ears and removed the remainder of the ear wax that was causing issues which has relieved the problems I had and has also helped with the stress and anxiety I felt regarding my ear health. He also conducted two types of hearing tests to ensure my hearing was as it should be and recommended what I can do moving forward to improve any dryness in my ears and to prevent the same thing happening again. I left feeling physically and mentally better and am really happy with the results! Dr Armaj Ali also did this free of charge for me following the previous appointment!
Overall, an excellent service, friendly staff that go above and beyond for you, a lovely atmosphere and brilliant results! There is also free parking on site :)
Thank you so much!

A year ago I needed an urgent Earwax Removal appointment for my 95 year old Mum. Mr Armaj Ali fitted my Mum in that same day and since then she hasn't looked back. My Mum has asked me to post this review. With her current hearing aid not coming up to scratch, she returned to BestHear in July this year and is now the proud owner of Heareka Hearing Aids, which have transformed her hearing. Mum opted for the button type hearing aids which, at 95 years of age, were easier for her to handle. Armaj was very patient and clear when explaining their use, and over the following month made sure that Mum was happy and confident using them - which she is. He was always at the end of the phone if we needed advice, so aftercare support is excellent. We are all looking forward to Christmas this year with our Mum, who will now be able to join in our conversations. I can't speak highly enough of Armaj and BestHear, and as someone who doesn't normally write reviews, I am more than happy to do so on this occasion. The clinic is in an easily accessible location, with car parking outside the door - a bonus.
